San Ardo report:
Wake up call for San Ardo is 4am. Race is 2.5 hrs drive with an 8 am start. The crew was:
Innes, Hudak, Yeah-Yeah, Fowlkes, Miller, Daniel, Luca, Axt and NELSON. Brad Moore was representing the 3’s. We manage to get on the road and are running ahead of time.
This being my last race of the year (out of town next 3 weekends), I really enjoyed the car time. The pre race chatter in the MF is one of my favorite parts of racing. Yeah Yeah and Brad were asleep, Innes had his headphones on, so it was pretty much Fowlkes and I telling eachother how fast we used to be. I probably told everyone at least 5 times that I got 3rd at San Ardo in my 1st race in the Pro 1/2 field. Matt Albee wrote a detailed race report. That was 1998, 7 years ago. I think I have gotten slower every year since.
Race starts on time, and we are off. 23+ mile lap, 4 laps. Mostly flat, some wind, quite a bit of bad pavement after the feed zone. Notable this year is the fact that several pros are at the race, in town for the upcoming SFGP: Mike Sayers and Eric Wohlberg, along with the entire Sea Foam team, some Sierra Nevada, Webcor and other guys. Also, team Spine is in full glory, looking to defend or capture something they call the ‘Cal Cup’ title.
The first lap was fast. Everyone full of energy, and trying to get a move off. To no avail. Sayers and Wohlberg were marked by everybody and when they went up the road everyone went scrambling. We slowed down before town, and continued this pattern for the next couple laps. Attack, chase, sit, attack, etc… I did my best to get in any move that we didn’t have anyone in, even did a couple attacks myself (easiest way to ensure you get in a move? Be the move. That’s right). The whole team was diligent in covering and initiating moves. We got great feeds from Ruggy (thanks!) and we were all set for the last 40 miles of racing.
The chosen one for the day was Innes. I knew he was good since he wasn’t talking and he was hiding in the back all day. Lap 3 saw some serious attacks and Innes came up and hopped in some moves. Just before town a group goes up the road and we are caught out. Bad timing, we have nobody in there. Daniel attacks to go across and the field is scrambling into the last feed. Group comes together just after the feed and splits again. Now there are maybe 40 riders left. And the group is split in two. Innes is in the front group. I am in the 2nd group with Axt, miller and fowlkes. Everyone else has either flatted out (luca, yeah yeah) or is cracked from chasing and attacking. wohlberg and sayers attack. Not sure what happened next, but 4 riders including wohl and sayers are off, then the group chasing them, then the survivor group, and I see Innes on the side of the road. Flat tire.
So now we have nobody in the 1st group, and its me, miller and axt (so I think) and miller rallies the troops to pull ourselves across to the 1st chase. I tell him if I pull I am done and I sit in and hold on for dear life. I have the utmost respect for miller and axt, who went to the front and drilled it. I finally recovered a little and helped pull some and we made it across.
the group is all together with about 15 miles to go. 4 riders still off, and team spine starts pulling like crazy, the whole team is taking a stab at it. I look around and out of nowhere comes Fowlkes! He made it onto the back of our group and had been holding on. He looks like I feel, and I realize that finishing is the only goal for today. Spine they keeps it up for 10 miles and I sit in. Spine guys start coming off, but the remaining few keep pulling. With 5 miles to go there is the most spectacular and unnecessary crash, bikes go flying everywhere. No GSLS in the crash, and I am glad to get through it.
We hit the town, and the group of 4 is within sight, riders start pulling even harder, and I can’t believe it when we hit the bridge and we catch the lead group. Less than 2 k to go and we are gruppo compacto.
I think miller is the onlyone who gets up there for the sprint, getting a top 10 finish (great job miller) and fowlkes and I cross happily. Axt was in there too, not sure where he finished.
turns out Brad got 3rd in the 3’s race, and innes got a spare wheel and rode out the rest of the race. man style.
All in all a great time and a great end to the season. I was thoroughly cracked afterwards. Happy to have a burrito and drive home.
