dean is faster than levi

30 08 2005

Since I love to relive the glory of 1998, I had to point out the results from the 1998 Giro di San Francisco. Dean won the race, and look who he beat in 2nd place.

Check out who got 2nd in the womens race (odessa and levi must have gone home sad with their 2nds), 1st in the 3’s race, and 3rd in the cat 4 race and 6th in the jr race. Oh the memories.

So Dean? We going to do it again in 2005?

“Giro” makes up San Fran double

The day after Sunday September 4’s Barclays Global Investors San Francisco Grand Prix comes one of the longest-standing races on the San Francisco area’s calendar, the Giro di San Francisco at Levi Strauss Plaza at Battery and Union Streets. The Monday, September 5 race program runs from 8:00am to 4:00pm and is sponsored by McGuire Cycling; Lombardi Sports; Velo Promo; and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

“The Giro di San Francisco is a special race because of its 31-year legacy; the tight and fast, six-corner course; the amazing feeling from racing on the streets of our great city; and the ambiance of the crowd that turns out to cheer,” said Bruce Johnson, McGuire Cycling team co-manager. “The Giro’s greater than $10,000 prize list will create quite fierce competition. We expect to draw from racers in the S.F. Grand Prix, which is now on the same weekend as the Giro for the first time.”

Past winners of the Giro di San Francisco include triple Tour de France winner Greg LeMond who won the inaugural event in 1979; former world champion, Karen Brems; two-time Olympian, Eric Wohlberg; two-time Olympian, Kent Bostick; and national champion, Helene Drumm.

ITunes Music Phone Set to Launch
By GREG SANDOVAL, AP Technology Writer

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

(08-30) 13:30 PDT SAN FRANCISCO, (AP) –

A long-delayed cell phone from Apple Computer Inc. and Motorola Inc. that can play iTunes music downloads is finally set to debut through Cingular Wireless, a research analyst said.

The new phone will be equipped with software that would allow it to play songs purchased at Apple’s iTunes Web site, according to Roger Entner, an analyst for research firm Ovum who said he learned of the plans from an industry executive.

Representatives from Apple, Cingular and Motorola declined to comment, but the three companies are expected to roll out the device at an event here next week. Apple announced Monday that it would host a news conference Sept. 7.

eBay says completes Shopping.com purchase

Tue Aug 30, 2005 9:03 AM ET

NEW YORK, Aug 30 (Reuters) – Online auctioneer eBay Inc. (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it had completed its purchase of Shopping.com (SHOP.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and expects the acquisition will be dilutive to 2005 net earnings per share.

eBay said the purchase for about $634 million, or $21 a share, in cash would be dilutive due to incremental charges for stock-based compensation and amortization of acquired intangible assets. Excluding certain items, the company said the acquisition would be immaterial to earnings.

San Ardo RR Report

29 08 2005

San Ardo report:
Wake up call for San Ardo is 4am. Race is 2.5 hrs drive with an 8 am start. The crew was:
Innes, Hudak, Yeah-Yeah, Fowlkes, Miller, Daniel, Luca, Axt and NELSON. Brad Moore was representing the 3’s. We manage to get on the road and are running ahead of time.

This being my last race of the year (out of town next 3 weekends), I really enjoyed the car time. The pre race chatter in the MF is one of my favorite parts of racing. Yeah Yeah and Brad were asleep, Innes had his headphones on, so it was pretty much Fowlkes and I telling eachother how fast we used to be. I probably told everyone at least 5 times that I got 3rd at San Ardo in my 1st race in the Pro 1/2 field. Matt Albee wrote a detailed race report. That was 1998, 7 years ago. I think I have gotten slower every year since.

Race starts on time, and we are off. 23+ mile lap, 4 laps. Mostly flat, some wind, quite a bit of bad pavement after the feed zone. Notable this year is the fact that several pros are at the race, in town for the upcoming SFGP: Mike Sayers and Eric Wohlberg, along with the entire Sea Foam team, some Sierra Nevada, Webcor and other guys. Also, team Spine is in full glory, looking to defend or capture something they call the ‘Cal Cup’ title.

The first lap was fast. Everyone full of energy, and trying to get a move off. To no avail. Sayers and Wohlberg were marked by everybody and when they went up the road everyone went scrambling. We slowed down before town, and continued this pattern for the next couple laps. Attack, chase, sit, attack, etc… I did my best to get in any move that we didn’t have anyone in, even did a couple attacks myself (easiest way to ensure you get in a move? Be the move. That’s right). The whole team was diligent in covering and initiating moves. We got great feeds from Ruggy (thanks!) and we were all set for the last 40 miles of racing.

The chosen one for the day was Innes. I knew he was good since he wasn’t talking and he was hiding in the back all day. Lap 3 saw some serious attacks and Innes came up and hopped in some moves. Just before town a group goes up the road and we are caught out. Bad timing, we have nobody in there. Daniel attacks to go across and the field is scrambling into the last feed. Group comes together just after the feed and splits again. Now there are maybe 40 riders left. And the group is split in two. Innes is in the front group. I am in the 2nd group with Axt, miller and fowlkes. Everyone else has either flatted out (luca, yeah yeah) or is cracked from chasing and attacking. wohlberg and sayers attack. Not sure what happened next, but 4 riders including wohl and sayers are off, then the group chasing them, then the survivor group, and I see Innes on the side of the road. Flat tire.

So now we have nobody in the 1st group, and its me, miller and axt (so I think) and miller rallies the troops to pull ourselves across to the 1st chase. I tell him if I pull I am done and I sit in and hold on for dear life. I have the utmost respect for miller and axt, who went to the front and drilled it. I finally recovered a little and helped pull some and we made it across.
the group is all together with about 15 miles to go. 4 riders still off, and team spine starts pulling like crazy, the whole team is taking a stab at it. I look around and out of nowhere comes Fowlkes! He made it onto the back of our group and had been holding on. He looks like I feel, and I realize that finishing is the only goal for today. Spine they keeps it up for 10 miles and I sit in. Spine guys start coming off, but the remaining few keep pulling. With 5 miles to go there is the most spectacular and unnecessary crash, bikes go flying everywhere. No GSLS in the crash, and I am glad to get through it.

We hit the town, and the group of 4 is within sight, riders start pulling even harder, and I can’t believe it when we hit the bridge and we catch the lead group. Less than 2 k to go and we are gruppo compacto.

I think miller is the onlyone who gets up there for the sprint, getting a top 10 finish (great job miller) and fowlkes and I cross happily. Axt was in there too, not sure where he finished.
turns out Brad got 3rd in the 3’s race, and innes got a spare wheel and rode out the rest of the race. man style.

All in all a great time and a great end to the season. I was thoroughly cracked afterwards. Happy to have a burrito and drive home.

Rocks Thrown at Border Patrol Chopper

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) – Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said.

Neither the pilot nor the Border Patrol observer was injured.

The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry in Andrade, Calif., on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft.

One baseball-sized rock gashed the rotor, forcing the pilot to land nearby, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the Border Patrol sector based in Yuma, Ariz. …

Teflon Doper? Lance Armstrong and Barry Bonds

24 08 2005

funny article in the chronicle today:

Lance: Teflon doper?

Check out the research:
“Lance’s affiliation with Michele Ferrari, an Italian doctor convicted on two doping-related charges in his native country, parallels Bonds’ connection to Greg Anderson, who has pleaded guilty to two federal charges in the BALCO drug case in which Bonds testified. Armstrong worked with Ferrari for several years, including the three that the Italian was on trial.”
